Wilhelmina (Wilma) Maria Smith, was born April 12th, 1959 in the Netherlands to Antonius and Adelheid van de Wetering. She passed away in the comfort of her home with her loved ones and dogs on November 25th, 2023. She was 64 years old.
Wilma grew up loving everything there was to love about horses. For many years she would spend her time at the barns working and riding horses. Later she would move to Canada and work for a family with horses.
She also grew up as the daughter of a butcher. Wilma’s father owned multiple butcher shops in Holland. Here she learned a lot about different cuts of meat and what it took to run a store.
She met Vince while he was working in Europe at Honeywell. The two hit it off quickly, and soon became a couple. On September 30th, 1985 Vince and Wilma got married in Valkenburg, Netherlands.
In 1988 they made the move back to the United States and decided that Colorado is where they would live. Here they welcomed their two wonderful children, Jackie and Brendan in 1990 and 1992.
The family holds many memories of Wilma from great dutch meals, skiing trips, NASCAR races, and to countless camping trips. Wilma loved to camp and visit National Parks. She would collect postcards and maps from all the wonderful places she visited. When her family would come to visit, Moab was always on the list for her to take them too. Wilma was also an avid NASCAR and Formula 1 fan, spending many weekends watching all the races. She and her family and friends enjoyed going to races anytime that Pikes Peak International Raceway had a race weekend! Wilma also went to races in North Carolina, and had a bucket list for Talladega and the Daytona 500.
Wilma is preceded in death by her mother and father, Adelheid & Antonious van de Wetering, sister Adelheid, brothers Hans and Bert, brothers-in-law Paul and Larry, and mother and father in law, Sally & Robert Smith. She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, Vince Smith, their children Jackie (Ryan) Hummel of Woodbine, Kansas, and Brendan Smith of Winter Park, Colorado; Grandson Kale Hummel; sisters Toos (Paul) and Margriet (Norbert), brother Tom (Marlou) Van de Wetering; as well many sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nephews, and nieces.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:00pm on April 20th, 2024 at the Smith Family Residence outside of Colorado Springs. The family will provide a light meal, but accepting sides if you choose too.
