Tom Carlin, 74, died after a long illness on February 6, 2022, at Alive Hospice Residence, Nashville, TN. He was born in Boston, MA, and lived his early life in Sarasota, and St. Petersburg, Florida. He graduated from the University of South Florida and was an accountant for many years. For several years he was a middle school math and science teacher. His last years before retirement were spent as an Information Technology Support Specialist, a job he truly loved.
Tom married his wife, Camille in 1983, and they were very happy to be able to celebrate their 39 th anniversary before his death. Tom and Camille met at a Big Brothers/Big Sisters Bingo fund-raiser where they were both volunteering. They always said they won each other at Bingo. Tom had always wanted children and adopted her son, Steve Singleton.
Steve and his family moved to Nashville for Steve’s work. Camille and Tom followed from St. Petersburg in 2012. Steve is married to Christy Cook Singleton. They have 3 children, Elizabeth, Rachel, and Steven.
Tom was an avid sailor and racer and owned several boats. As a young boy he explored Sarasota Bay in a dinghy and worked his way up to a 32-foot sailboat that he sold to move to Tennessee.
He had a pilot’s license in his youth and loved to fly. He loved history, woodworking, travel and camping, photography, knowing what was in the news – subscribing to 4 newspapers. He read a lot and had a surprising fund of trivia. He was proud of being a 10 Gallon blood donor.
Before he got sick, Tom fulfilled a couple of items on his bucket list – to do the Rusty Wallace Racing experience in Lebanon, Tn, and to fly in an antique airplane in Wisconsin.
Tom was adopted and in 2018, after taking an Ancestry DNA test, he connected with his birth family. He was surprised to find 6 new siblings. He became close to one of the brothers and a half sister and they have stayed in communication.
Tom is survived by his beloved brother, Jim Carlin and his wife Brenda of Newport, RI, their 3 sons, Jamie, John and Matt, and their families, a sister-in-law, Brenda Voelz, nephews, Dave and Richard Voelz and their families, brother-in-law Don Voelz (Alba) and nephew Sam Mercuri.
