Sue Warren Dover, 96, of Chattanooga, died peacefully at Canterfield of Franklin, Franklin, Tennessee, where she had lived and was greatly cared for during the past 2 years, on December 29, 2020. She was born October 14, 1924 in Jasper, Tennessee to Joseph Benjamin Warren and Joanna Duncan Warren. She was the youngest and last remaining of their only son and 7 daughters
After graduating from Chattanooga’s Central High School, Sue worked as a long distance telephone operator for Bell South. In the early 1940’s she lived in Tucson, Arizona to help an ailing sister with her children and household. In the fall of 1945 she met Hartrell Samuel (Bob) Dover, who had served with the 82 nd Airborne as an engineer/pathfinder and just returning from WWII. They married nine days later! After their marriage they lived in Atlanta for 2 years, before returning to Chattanooga where Bob would retire from the Chattanooga Police Department, as well as from Momar Industrial Chemicals. After classes at Vanderbilt, Sue went on to experience many successful years as a licensed real estate broker.
Sue and Bob were married 51 years until his death in 1996. Sue was also preceded in death by her daughter Tonya Greene, Ringgold, Georgia, son Randall Dover, Franklin, Tennessee and Son-in-law Peter Calabrese, Athens, Georgia. Sue’s family and faith was paramount to her. In 1951 she sang in the choir for Billy Graham’s 15 th Crusade, which toured throughout the Southern States. She also sang in church choirs and was active in the Young at Heart Senior adult group. She always had an affinity for travel. Being able to experience different countries, Visit many States, including Hawaii and Caribbean cruises greatly enriched her life.
Her biggest joy in life was to help others. Whether it was a member of her large family, or as a broker helping people sell their home or find their dream home, she always jumped in enthusiastically without hesitation. She was the epitome of virtue, loyalty, dependability and honesty, almost to a fault. If there was a problem with a property she would immediately point it out to a prospective buyer at the risk losing the sell. Her integrity created many return clients and referrals.
Becoming a grandmother was a role made for Sue. To them she was Sue-Sue or Mamaw and dearly loved by her and was loved dearly by each one. Throughout her adult life she hosted many gatherings of family and friends for holidays and other occasions. She found great pleasure in arranging reunions for her large extended family. Nothing made her happier than her Bible, babies and baking, often with unexpected ingredients. She will be remembered as someone never heard to utter anything mean, or ugly about another person. Her motto was, “Be nice, regardless. Always be kind.” And she followed it until her final hour.
There will be a memorial service at a later date in Chattanooga at the National Cemetery where she will be interred. Donations in her memory may be made to Habitat for Humanity.
