Michael Pinckard Thompson, Sr. of Franklin, Tennessee

December 17, 1937 - November 26, 2022

Michael “Mike” Pinckard Thompson Sr. of Brentwood, TN passed away November 26, 2022, at age 84.

Mike was born in Madison, Wisconsin but his father Alwin and mother Mary Anna moved the family to Louisiana soon after he was born. The family added a sister, Anne, and they lived in Hammond and then Lafayette, Louisiana. Mike graduated from Lafayette High in 1957. He attended Tulane University his freshman year and then enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a medical corpsman aboard the carrier Intrepid (which now resides in New York City as a museum). Mike continued his studies after the Navy, attending Southeastern Louisiana and ultimately the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now The University of Louisiana Lafayette). Mike met his lovely wife, Kay Bickham, while attending Southwestern Louisiana and they married in November 1963.

Majoring in Business, upon graduation in 1962 Mike started his career with the Continental Oil Company in New Orleans, Louisiana. Transitioning to Wachovia Bank in Charlotte, North Carolina, he became a branch manager and then just before the birth of his first son Michael Jr. he joined the E. I. DuPont company as a Senior Sales Representative in Wilmington, Delaware. From 1970 to 2000, Mike worked for the John H. Harland company, he served in many sales and sales leadership roles, living in Roswell, GA, Mandeville, LA, Medfield, MA and then Brentwood, TN. He retired as a Senior Vice President.

During his retirement, Mike committed many years to SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) and served in many capacities such as a mentor and eventually President of the Nashville chapter of this national organization.

Mike enjoyed spending time attending sporting events of his kids and grandchildren, mowing his yard, tinkering in the garage, and playing golf (in that order). He was especially fond of the 30 years he was able to host the family at his Center Hill Lake home, where many memories were made.  Mike and Kay have been members of Brentwood Methodist since 1978.

Mike is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kay Bickham Thompson, three children and their spouses: Michael Thompson (Marcia), Mary Beth Joiner (Jay), and Scott Thompson (May). “Papa” had eight grandchildren; Will Joiner (Sidney), Tyler Thompson (Ellie), James Thompson, Julianna Joiner, Hunter Thompson, Gabrielle Thompson, Garrett Joiner, and Samuel Thompson; and one great granddaughter, Evelyn Thompson. He is also survived by his sister Anne Dalrymple (Gerald), a niece and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at Brentwood United Methodist Church, 309 Franklin Road, Brentwood, TN on December 19, 2022. The visitation will begin at 1:00pm in the Narthex with the service beginning at 2:00pm in the Sanctuary, officiated by Reverend Casey Orr.  Interment will follow immediately after the service at the Brentwood United Methodist Church columbarium. The service will be recorded but not be available to view live.
