Michael Stephen Sweeney November 1, 1945-September 8, 2023 Mike was born and raised in Nashville TN. He was the first child of James and Catherine Sweeney.
Mike married Linda Lee Herrell on November 28, 1969. This November would have been their 54th anniversary.
On December 10, 1974, Mike and Linda had their first child, Patrick Michael Sweeney. On February 15, 1978, they had their daughter, Shannon Lee Sweeney. Both children brought a wealth of love and excitement into Mike and Linda’s lives.
Mike dearly loved his wife and his children. He loved family activities and watching Patrick and Shannon in sports, school, and church activities. Mike also enjoyed getting together with extended family especially for birthdays and holidays.
Shannon married Cory James Call on September 3, 2005. Mike and Linda happily accepted Cory into their family. Cory and Mike often had long talks. Cory and Patrick talked about shared interest in sports, music, and movies.
Shannon and Cory gifted Mike and Linda with 2 very precious grandchildren. Britton Sweeney Call arrived on May 15, 2007, and Sadie Lee Call on January 29, 2010. Mike wanted to be called Granddaddy. He made many wonderful memories with Britton and Sadie including playing games, going to watch their sports, church programs, and school programs. He especially enjoyed participating with them at their elementary school on Grandparents Day and Veterans Day.
Mike has 3 younger sisters – Lynne Sweeney Daniel, Susie Sweeney Parker (Tommy) and Cindy Sweeney Page. He also has 2 younger brothers Scott (Rhonda) and Kelly. They all agree Mike was a good “big brother” – generous and helpful. Mike’s extended family includes his sister[1]in-law Marjo Herrell Mecke, his brother-in-law Keith Herrell (Robin) and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mike graduated in 1967 with a degree in political science from MTSU where he also participated in ROTC. This led to his being commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the army. After additional training, he served in Germany in the 3rd Infantry Division until August of 1969. He was honorably discharged after serving 2 years and having attained the rank of Captain.
Mike worked for the Federal Government for 36 years – mostly in the Office of Personnel Management of the Internal Revenue Service. The last few years in OPM, he was a career counselor which he really enjoyed and even continued doing in retirement. Mike was a true Tennessee Volunteer. He was an avid fan of UT football. In addition to volunteering at Crievewood Baptist Church, he also volunteered as a grant writer for Fifty Forward and volunteered his career counseling skills to many young people, helping to prepare resumes and doing mock interviews. He also was elected and served on the US Community Credit Union board for several terms.
Mike accepted Christ and made his profession of faith as on older child at Radnor Baptist Church. He was also baptized there. In 1968 Mike joined Crievewood Baptist Church where Linda was already a member. He was an active member there until his health changed. He had been a deacon, served on committees – particularly Personnel and Finance, and taught a Men’s Sunday School class.
Mike valued his many friends, his loving family, and his strong faith. We will miss him, but we know he’s in the room Jesus prepared especially for him.
