Maxwell Carr Payne

Maxwell Carr Payne Jr. passed away November 19, 2017. Dr. Payne was born February 9, 1927 the son of Mary Evans Tarpley Payne and Maxwell Carr Payne Sr. He attended Peabody Demonstration School in Nashville, Tennessee from nursery school through High School. He attended Vanderbilt University for a year before serving in the US Naval Reserve. He returned to Vanderbilt and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1949. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi, ODK, and Phi Beta Kappa. He attended Princeton University, receiving his AM and PHD in 1951. He became a Research Associate of the Training Research Laboratory of the University of Illinois. In 1954 he joined the faculty of Georgia Institute of Technology where he stayed for 37 years. He helped the faculty of Psychology Department to develop bachelor, masters, and doctor's degrees in Psychology.
Dr. Payne taught 7 regular courses in Psychology in addition to special courses. He received a Distinguished Teachers Award in 1970. He was an active member of the Tech faculty serving on many institutional committees. He was active in professional societies in Psychology presenting many papers at meetings and serving on committees. He was President of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology, The Georgia Psychological Association, and The Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychologists.
Dr. Payne was a member of Northside United Methodist Church in Atlanta where he taught Sunday School classes until his health prevented it. He was most recently a member of Franklin First United Methodist Church.
He was married for 54 years to Juanita Campbell Payne, who predeceased him in 2011. He is survived by a son, Maxwell Carr Payne III (Laura), two daughters, Elizabeth Payne McKinney (Brad), and Allison Payne Klausner (Kris) and six grandchildren, Kristopher Klausner, Luke Klausner, Chase Klausner, Ricky Klausner, Campbell McKinney, and Morgan McKinney.
