Mary Alice Cannata, 71, passed away on Friday, April 13 at NHC Place in Cool Springs after a 5-year struggle with cancer.
Mary was born in New York City to George and Catherine Hodges. She grew up in Florham Park, New Jersey, where she graduated from Hanover Park High School. Mary raised her family in Bridgewater, New Jersey before moving to Franklin in 2008.
A homemaker, dedicated wife and mother, Mary was the backbone of her family. She steadfastly supported her husband during his career and her son during his education, while running the household and generally keeping everyone in line. She was an active school parent, leading a Cub Scout den, helping out in classrooms and supporting PTO fundraisers. She cared for her ailing mother in her home for two years.
Mary's hobbies included landscaping, gardening, cooking, reading and decorating. Over the years, she mastered recipes from her in-law's Italian restaurant, which she used for celebrations and family gatherings. She was thrilled to have a daughter-in-law who could bake an apple pie from scratch. After her husband's retirement, he and Mary moved to the Westhaven subdivision where she enjoyed the community of her neighbors and the company of her grandchildren.
Mary was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Michael. Her spirit is carried on by her husband, Sal; son, Matt; daughter-in-law, Marisa; grandchildren Wyatt, Jazmyn and Myles; sisters Kathy, Patricia and Betsy and brother George.
There will be a service in Mary's memory on Monday, 4/23 between 6 and 8PM at the Westhaven Residents Club at 401 Cheltenham Rd, Franklin.
