Marian Adele Geise Miles, age 89, of Brentwood, TN passed away peacefully on June 7, 2024.
Marian was born on December 15, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri to the late Adele Thiele Geise and
August William Geise, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John Keathley
Miles, Jr., and son, Ralph William Miles, both of Brentwood, TN. Marian is survived by
children, Donna (Darris) McCollum, Ann Arbor, MI and David (Tammy) Miles, Cabot, AR;
daughter-in-law, Stefanie Rose Miles, Jackson, KY; grandchildren, Katherine Adele McCollum,
Clara Maria Rose Miles, and Craigan Keathley Miles; nephews, August W. Geise, Silverthorne,
CO, Bruce (Danita) Geise, Parker, CO; and niece, Karen (Stephen) Frank, Tulsa, OK.
Marian graduated from Normandy High School in St. Louis, MO and earned her bachelor’s
degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University. She began her nursing career in 1957 with
Vanderbilt University Hospital, subsequently earning the position of Head Nurse on the Polio
Ward caring for patients, some being treated in iron lung machines. In 1976, she relocated to
Knoxville, TN with her family and worked in the University Hospital at the University of
Tennessee, including in the Hemophilia Treatment Clinic where she was a favorite of many
young patients. After moving back to Brentwood, TN in 1985, she finished her nursing career
working in case management with Eckman/Freeman helping individual patients navigate their
full continuum of care and advocating for them to ensure they each received the type of care and
services they needed. Marian was beloved by all her patients for her kindness and caring, always
going the extra mile to make sure they received the best care possible.
Marian and John met at Vanderbilt and married in 1959. As their family grew, she and John
built a strong family foundation for their children that endures to this day. She was a very
loving, thoughtful, and involved parent, always supporting their activities, such as leading the
girl scout troop and helping make pinewood derby cars. She loved playing games with the
children and grandchildren and could always be counted on for a competitive game of cards.
She also had a very special relationship with her three beloved grandchildren. She instilled a
sense of service, caring, and kindness to others, while also making sure that there was love,
laughter, and fun. Marian also gave the same selfless support to her husband in his endeavors,
especially as a Rotary spouse during his 44 years of service in Rotary International in the
Brentwood and West Knoxville Clubs.
Never one to be idle, her love of flower gardening led to her active membership in the
Brentwood Garden Club, serving as president, and creating award-winning flower
arrangements. She was very talented with needlework and created many beautiful pieces that
will be treasured by family. Marian was also an excellent cook, making wonderful meals,
beautiful holidays, and creating cherished memories for family and friends.
Marian was a longtime member of Brentwood United Methodist Church where she was an active
member of the Wesley Forum Sunday School Class.
