John Roy Bailey of Smyrna, Tennessee

December 9, 1940 - February 9, 2021

Age 80, passed away on February 9, 2021, in Nashville, TN.  Born in Erwin, Tennessee, he was raised by his late maternal grandmother Naomi Bailey, affectionately known as Omi.  He is preceded in death by his mother Virginia Bailey; sister Jenny Bailey; brothers Glen and Richard Bailey; and special friend Carolyn Jennings.

John is survived by two daughters, Tina Bailey, Tiffany Bailey, 4 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

John was a graduate of Unicoi County High School in Erwin, TN.  He studied mathematics at George Washington University in Washington, DC, surveying at the Department of Agriculture Graduate School in Washington, DC, and computer science at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD.

He was employed by the Department of the Army Map Service for 10 years as a cartographer.  He subsequently spent 22 years as a marine cartographer for the Department of Commerce, National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, Coast and Geodetic Survey.  His work included the compilation and updated of nautical charts of the coastal waters of the US and Great Lakes as well as compilation of topographic maps of various foreign countries and projects involving the moon.

His hobbies were coin collecting, tennis, country dancing, and ballroom dancing.

John’s final resting place will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Erwin, Tennessee.
