Jane Ambrose Srygley passed away on December 15, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Brown Srygley, Sr. and her brother, Joshua Henry Ambrose, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Ladd; grandchildren, Josh, Jack, and Luke Ladd; siblings, Betsy Pilgreen and Brown Ambrose; nieces and nephew, Beth Pilgreen, Kathryn Ambrose, and Eric Ambrose. She will also be missed by her five stepchildren—Donald Srygley, Jr., Bill Srygley, John Reed Srygley, Robert Srygley, and Carolyn Srygley Moore.
A native Nashvillian, Jane graduated from Hillsboro High School and attended Peabody College before starting her journalism career. Jane took on multiple roles in her thirty years with the Nashville Banner, rising from reporter to Lifestyles editor before shifting her focus to the Youth Banner and community affairs. She was named Woman of the Year in 1976 by the Davidson County Business and Professional Women’s Club and also received the Governor’s Outstanding Tennessean Award. After the Nashville Banner closed in 1998, she became Membership Director at Cheekwood. Later, she returned to journalism and worked as a proofreader for multiple media outlets.
Jane was a member of the Junior League of Nashville and the Nashville chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames. She was also an active volunteer at Bellevue Presbyterian Church.
Jane loved gardening, exercising, reading, home tours, Broadway plays, and time with family. We have lost a true Southern lady. She never sought the spotlight. She was content to quietly bless others with her kindness and thoughtfulness.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to TPAC Forward! Recovery Fund, Cheekwood Estates & Gardens, or Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
