Born April 9
th
, 1945 to Otto and Mary (Burnett) Porter in Mayfield, KY; Jack Leroy “Chocolate” Porter passed away, Thursday, November 19, 2020 after a month’s long battle with Covid-19 at the age of 75.
Jack lived in Nashville most of his life, with several years spent in both Chattanooga, TN and Hagerstown, MD. He was a graduate of Madison Academy in Madison, TN, and attended the Seventh-day Adventist Reform church on Old Hickory Boulevard. Jack was a veteran of the Vietnam War, ‘65-’67. By God’s grace, he was pulled from the transit to Vietnam & remained in Hawaii working as a medic during his time in the U.S. Army, never making it to Vietnam. A truck driver by trade, he loved to regale his family with tales from his time over the road. He also loved telling his children and grandchildren old family stories passed down by his grandpa. Writing poetry was Jack’s favorite pastime, and he shared his writings with all who would give ear.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Roxie; two daughters, Michelle Porter (Jack Yarger) and Julie Jackson (Dave), both of Chattanooga, TN; one son, John H. Porter, also of Chattanooga; one step-son, Thomas Randall Jr of Hagerstown, MD; grandchildren, Cameron, Danny, Lincoln, and Iris; two sisters Meri Howard (Charles) and Sheri Brown (Kirk), both of Nashville; and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Jack was preceded in death by both parents, two sisters, Jo Ann and Daphne, and one brother, Danny. Jack especially loved his grandchildren, and they very much loved their Pappy.
Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, April 11th, at 10:30 a.m., at the Seventh-day Adventist Reform church at 1343 Old Hickory Boulevard. Veteran’s honors will be performed Friday, April 9
th
, at 2:00 P.M. at the Nashville National Cemetery in Madison, TN. Flowers are welcomed, as are donations made to any Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jack’s name.
