Irving E. Ruhl of Port Charlotte, Florida, loving husband, brother, stepfather and grandfather, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2024, at the age of 81. Born in Evergreen Park (Chicago), Illinois on January 17, 1943, he led a life marked by courage, hard work, and a deep love for his family and the simple joys of life.
As a young man, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and later in the National Guard. His commitment to service and his desire to stand up for others carried into his career, where he held roles within the Manufacturing and Aerospace industries. During his career he served as a union steward, tirelessly advocating for his fellow workers, always standing up for the underdog with passion and integrity.
He was a man who could work magic with his hands. He had an innate gift for fixing things and was always willing to lend a hand to friends and family in need of his practical expertise. He found deep satisfaction in working with his hands, crafting and problem-solving with skill and dedication.
A voracious reader, he poured his love of literature into writing his own novel. He often contributed articles and opinion pieces to the local newspaper, sharing his thoughts and perspectives with his Florida community.
His mind was always at work, whether he was delving into a new book or tackling one of the daily newspaper puzzles. An avid fisher and lover of the water, he spent countless happy hours casting lines, shelling, and enjoying the peace of Florida’s shores, where he and his wife Janis made their home in later years. Despite his tough exterior he cherished the companionship of his little dog Maya, whose loyalty and warmth were a constant source of joy.
He is survived by his devoted wife Janis; his brother John (Fran) Ruhl; stepdaughters Kim (John) Anders, Pamela (Steven) Sliman and Tricia (Joe) Marchert. Caring Grandpa and favorite fisherman of Lauryn (Cooper) Rush, Joey and Erin Marchert; Kylie Dryier, Justin (Victoria) Frost, the late Jason Frost, Bailey Anders and Jude Sliman. Loving Great Grampy of seven and fond uncle to many. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irving and Florence, two sisters and two brothers. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who will remember him as a man of principle, kindness, and humor, with an ever-curious mind and an adventurous spirit.
A private service will be held for family and close friends at a later date. In remembrance, the family kindly requests donations to a veterans’ charity or the Alzheimer’s Foundation in his honor. Irving E. Ruhl will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
