Holly Hampton Cumming of Nashville, Tennessee

July 17, 1955 - February 28, 2020

Holly Hampton Cumming, counselor, professional organizer and Montessori teacher, died on Feb. 28, at age 64, in Nashville. The cause of death was two weeks of flu and pneumonia.

She was an amazing woman: brave, bright, creative, sensitive, bold, funny, loving, adventurous and faithful. She delighted many, influenced many, and loved many.

Holly struggled with immune system issues, non-epileptic seizures, COPD, and other physiological challenges. Holly was born in Fayetteville, Ga. She grew up in a house that her father built, rode horses, climbed trees and worked & played around the farm. She attended Fayetteville High School, graduating a year early, then attended West Georgia College and University of Georgia. She worked as a Montessori teacher at Northwoods and Arbor in Atlanta, then attended Georgia State to earn her Bachelor’s degree.

She moved to Nashville in 1992 to marry Bryan Cumming, working first as a Montessori teacher at Ithaka in Franklin, then starting a career as an organizer and life coach. She soon followed her instincts to become a counselor, enrolling in Trevecca Nazarene University to earn her master’s degree in counseling in 2007.

While training as a counselor, she worked as a Geriatric Care manager for LifeLinks in Nashville. Her first internship was at Agape Counseling Center; she then entered private practice at Cypress Counseling, in Brentwood, Tenn., where she was still working in February 2020 when hospitalized.

As a counselor, Holly specialized in trauma, and was licensed in EMDR and Splankna. Together with her musician husband Bryan, she produced a series of Bilateral Music albums designed to help EMDR clients unlock neurological pathways to neutralize negative emotions attached to traumatic memories. Each album features a cover photograph taken by Holly.

Holly’s vibrant Christian faith animated her daily life, and her profession. She wanted the world to know the love of Jesus, and continually found opportunities to demonstrate that love with everyone she met, knew, and counseled.

She is survived by her husband Bryan, her step-daughter and son-in-law Anna and Gary Beckley and four granddaughters, siblings Dana Archer, Penny Hampton, Stuart Hampton and Mitchael Hampton, step-mother Beejee Hampton, and step-brother John Rolison, as well as a plethora of nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate her life on Saturday March 14, 2020 at 1:00 pm at The Farm, 4878 Lickton Pike, Whites Creek, TN 37189.
