Barbara Gibson Pryor of Monroe, Georgia

October 16, 1935 - December 25, 2019

Barbara Gibson Pryor, 84, of Monroe, GA slipped quietly into the arms of Jesus for His birthday on
December 25, 2019. She was an amazing woman with many friends and family who loved her and were
loved by her.

Barbara was born in Snowflake, VA in October, 1935. Her parents, James and Louise Gibson, also had
two sons, and Barbara was the middle child between James and Daniel Gibson. Barbara received her
Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Carson Newman College and a Master’s Degree from The
University of Miami. She met Howard Pryor in Homestead, FL where he was stationed with the US Air
Force. They returned to Tennessee where they were married on December 27, 1958. They had their
daughter, Laurel, while Howard was a student and Barbara was teaching at Carson Newman College. A
few years later they moved to Florida where their son, Dayne, was born. Barbara and Howard then
moved to Snellville, GA in 1979 and eventually retired in Monroe, GA in 1998.

Barbara was a devoted teacher for 40 years and taught students of all ages, from elementary to college.

She retired from the Gwinnett County School System where she taught Special Learning Disabilities
classes at Snellville Middle School.

As a member of First Baptist Monroe, Barbara loved the church and especially enjoyed her Sunday
School class. She was also a member of Monroe Golf & Country Club for over 30 years. She was proud
to serve as president of the Monroe Ladies Golf Association and loved working with her golf buddies
organizing special events and tournaments.

Barbara thoroughly enjoyed travel, golf, playing piano, all types of games, and jigsaw puzzles. She
especially loved the beach where she made memories swimming and crabbing with her children and
grandchildren. Barbara made friends easily and was known for her joyful attitude, sweet nature,
competitive spirit, and contagious fun. Even as her health declined and a brain tumor took away her
mobility, she embraced these changes in life with true charm and grace, and became a beloved resident
at Great Oaks Senior Living.

Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Howard. She is survived by two
children, Laurel Renegar (Doug) of Franklin, TN and Dayne Pryor (Anne) of Alpharetta, GA;
grandchildren, Linsey Renegar Wagner (Josh), Casey Renegar Draiss (Michael), Jackson Pryor, and Addy Pryor; great grandchildren, Graham and Eloise Wagner, and Ryder Draiss; sisters-in-law, Ruth Gibson of Gastonia, NC and Claudene (Fred) Thomas of Glenshaw, PA; and many cherished nephews and nieces.

For Tennessee friends and family, there will be a Celebration of Life service on Saturday, January 18,
2020 at 9 am at the Famous Dave’s in Smyrna TN.

For Georgia family and friends, there will be a Celebration of Life service held at First Baptist Church of
Monroe on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at 4pm, followed by a reception at the Monroe Golf & Country
Club.

The family will also host a small reception at Great Oaks Senior Living in Monroe, GA on Sunday, January 26th at 10am for residents following their Sunday worship service.

Barbara was very proud of her record of being the oldest person to zipline at the Camp Highlands Ropes Course. While flowers are welcome, donations can be made at Camphighland.com/donate to the Barbara Pryor Memorial Fund.
